I am looking for a draft or draft cross for sale in South Africa (I live in Cape Town but will travel to see horses). It must be a big bodied horse as it is for my fiance who weighs about 119kg and 6′2. He is a dead beginner and just wants to trail ride for fun. Does anyone know of any breeders in the country or any horses that fit this description that are for sale? I have been all over the internet ads to no avail. Please keep answers relevant to South Africa. Thanks!!

Hi. I don’t own a horse, but would like to buy one or two in the near future, so am trying to do my research. I live in a rural area in S. Dakota and recently moved to a place with a large pasture (15 acres, give or take?) with plenty of grass in the spring & summer. Currently the pasture supports a flock of about 30 sheep during the warm months. In the fall, there are a billion people around me that cut hay, and I’ve already been told I can have some round hay bales for free.

Now, I am quite interested in getting a draft horse, preferrably a Belgian. Most of the people around me are die-hard quarter horse fans (one is a cattle rancher who refers to horses as “hay burners”)…and they look at me like I’m nuts when I say I want a Belgian. “That thing will eat you out of house and home” they say.

I have read on the Internet that draft horses *do* eat more than a smaller horse, but the extra amount is not hugely significant. All of the other advice I’ve gotten about feeding draft horses was anecdotal- somebody who “knew somebody” with a draft horse, etc.

I guess I would like to hear from somebody who actually OWNS a draft horse(s) & can give me a solid comparison between their feed requirements & that of a quarter horse. How much hay, how much do you need to supplement, etc? Thanks.

The timothy has more nutrition and is less fattening than the alfalfa hay.

If you don’t have a lot of storage room for hay bales, you can think about giving your horse horse fiber. The hay cube is one of the most popular versions of horse fiber. You can get tightly compacted cubes of hay that will take up a lot less room. The most popular version is the cubes made from alfalfa. You can also find cubes in pet stores, but generally, these cubes are for bunnies and other small animals, not horses. You need to ask for at least 50 pounds in hay cubes to get the best deal. You can also get pelleted hay, but experienced horse owners don’t typically prefer this option.

If you compete in horse shows frequently or prefer long trail rides, you will need to give your horse supplemental pieces to his diet, including more grain or pelleted feed. Most of the time, pleasure horses will just need a cup of grain a few times a week. Such are the possessions of this world’s life; but in nearness to Allah is the best of the goals (to return to).

Allah made man love women, sons, gold, silver; Horses, cattle, and well-tilled land. This meaning of inherited human behavior and tradition is not mentioned in the Bible.

Surah 8:60

Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know. Whatever ye shall spend in the Cause of Allah, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly.

This is a prophylactic verse to prevent wars between nations.

Be ready with all of your power, and then your enemies will be afraid of you.

No doubt that USA is the first country following this verse.

Surah 16:8

And (He has created) Horses, mules, and donkeys, for you to ride and use for show; and He Creates (other) things of which ye have no knowledge.

Allah Creates what we do not know.

This verse preceded the sciences at any time, now and in the future.
