I recently saw an ad for a Haflinger Draft horse that was 14.3h. Is anyone familiar with these?

draft horse
Gina @ Sand Castle Alapahas asked:

I am heavy set and although I have horses already I am looking for one I wouldn’t be afraid to ride. I was surprised to find a draft this size. Is this a normal size for this breed? I would love some info on them from someone familiar with them. I don’t want websites, I’d like real life opinions on them. Are they good for a rider who needs to regain confidence? Are they good for a heavier rider? Any info please! Thanks!
For the one who asked….I am 5′2, hence why I am seeking something low to the ground, lol…..pls don’t ask my weight! :p

Haflingers are good, stocky, strong draft horses which can be ridden as successfully as driven. They have a lot of get up and go, but are quite versatile..yes, this is a normal size for this breed, this size and just a little larger. They are sorrel with flaxen mane/tails are are quite pretty. The are very agile and are capable of moving quite quickly when asked. Sometimes they make good “pulling horses” if there is such a thing as a good pulling horse, I **** to drive them after they have been used for that. At any rate, they very good horses and are not known for any particular weaknesses, mental, emotional nor physical.

Haflingers are usually small. They are draft horses but are small. Ive seen them smaller. There cute little guys. You could ride one. they can hold people as they are sturdy. A person can only ride a horse if they are under a third of their weight

    Good luck =]

They are a great breed. They have brilliant minds and are very willing animals. However you will find pukes in every breed, so you just have to weed through them.

I dont really know what your weight is, but you seem knowledgable enough to know the horses limits. I would go check it out and see if it works for you. You could also use it for driving too.

Just some larger breeds for you to look at. Hope this helps!!!

How tall are you? Riding with your legs too long or too short can be uncomfortable. Short legs on a wide backed horse can be ungainly, too. A horse can bear up to 1/3 of its weight.

Haflingers are awesome draft horses. Technically, they are usually pony sized, but to my knowledge they aren’t referred to as draft pony.

If a haflinger peeks your fancy, you might want to also check out the Norwegian Fjord - another drafty pony size riding/driving horse with a wonderful personality & mindset, and a fun mane color too!

Hlflingers are cool draft ponies. 14.3 is on the larger end of the spectrum - most of the ones I’ve seen were between 13 and 14 hands. Although they can handle more weight than another breed of the same size, there is an upper limit. Without telling us your weight it’s hard to judge. If you’re only 5′2″, then you must not be TOO big if you can still picture yourself on a horse!
