Stick to your guns, this lady is clearly being very childish. Surely she must know what a stupid idea it would be to put a stallion in with your horses? (or horse and donkey) Even if they were in seperate paddocks you would need a sturdy double fence between the paddocks. If this woman was such a good friend she would respect the fact that you wouldn’t want to risk the lives of your horses….if she was any kind of horsewoman she’d know better than that. Imagine the kind of damage a draft horse stallion could do to an arab and a miniature donkey. If she won’t see sense by calmly talking to her and explaining your reasons then its a pretty one sided friendship and one you could probably do without
I definatly agree with the other girl! There is no way you would want to put a DRAFT Stallion with your mini donkey and arabian. Her stallion would kill your babies in an instand. And even if you would put them in different paddocks you would need some very sturdy fencing for that draft, and it would need to be high enough he couldnt jump! You definatly did the right thing in protecting your kids(horses). And since you only have 4 acres. Which is fine for your 2 guys! But if you would put a draft horse on that he would trample your ground and grass and it would be hard for it to grow in! Hope I helped.
I’m sorry….I started to say that that would be NUTS but I’m trying to be nice. It may depend on the age of the stud….a baby would be okay. I really doubt that your fence is stallion-safe. We have drafts and they’re really sweet, but they are big and they break our welded pipe fences (small pipe) just rubbing on them. One completely demolised a metal gate trying to jump over it, and our drafts aren’t huge. (The biggest is 16.3 hands). When we had a mini-stud he could easily go over a 4 ft. fence….and he tore down a chain-link fence once.
Our friend has a Clydesdale stud…a beautiful black animal, but he wasn’t trained well and he used to literally drag her around to get across to the mares. He was kept in a heavy metal-pipe pen in a stable…I don’t know how tall, but it was about 6 ft. I think. He was like a demon….think of a wild stallion.
Our vet’s big QH stud is also kept in a metal-bar pen in a stable (with a run) and I saw him try to COME OVER THE TOP of the fence at another young horse. We were told (as visitors) to even stay out of the barn’s aisle while the stallion was acting like that.
I’m sorry that your friend is mad at you. Do you have a mutal horsey friend (stable owner, breeder, etc.) to talk to about this? Perhaps this mutual friend could talk to the stallion’s owner. I can’t imagine a person asking anyone to keep a stud…unless the person asked was a breeder herself who happened to have an extra stallion-safe pen and the skills to handle a stud.
There are some GREAT, SWEET stallions out there…but a stud is a stud. He might really hurt your donkey….it’s hard to say.
You have to do what is best for your animals. It sounds like your neighbor should not own an animal. Your neighbor should not have gotten the horse if she was not able to take care of it and putting it in a situation where it can hurt another animal and possibly get hurt is not a good owner. You have a responsibility to your animals to keep them safe. Do not let her put her horse on your property.
