Draft Horse?

Pesky Fly asked:

I feel quite stupid for asking this but, I have been riding English for 10 years and I took lessons once a week for 7 of those years. I currently own a TWH mare and she is a wonderful first horse, I have learned so much from her. BUT, I have always loved draft horses and I have been given the opportunity to buy another horse, I am looking at a 2 year old Percheron filly started in ground work. She is $2,300.00. I was wondering if their temperaments are very different from other horses and how much do they eat, how much do they cost to get shod?
Her price is not firm so I will not offer much as horses in our area are dirt cheap. I am in Kentucky, near Fort Knox.

Draft horses are very good horses but aren’t as vesitile as others due to their sheer size. They are expensive to up keep as everything is more expensive including the farrier, vet, food, etc. Also, drafts tend to be very sweet but think you should ’save’ them anytime they are spooked so will attempt to jump in your pocket as they don’t realize their sheer size. A great horse to have is a draft cross. You have the possibility of breeding her later with a finer horse such as thoroughbred and coming out with a lighter horse with all the drafts temperment. I currently have a Percheron/Thoroughbred cross who is excellent but I also knew his dad, a Percheron stallion, who was an angel to ride and handle. I would be a bit reluctant to pay $2300 for an unproven percheron filly so I would offer them something like $1500 and work from there. Good luck

Every thing is more expensive of course. on the other hand 2300 is allot for her depending on what area of the country you are in there are some great horse auctions for draft ’s Topeka Indiana has several when I was at the last one i saw several go for under 500 and lots of very good proven geldings for 1200 area and theses were well trained beautiful animals as far as temper they are normally much easier going
