Two heavy draft horses must pull a heavy sleigh. Though it is not allowed to use a whip, the horses give their best.

Hermosos caballos. beautifull horses. Lastima que los hagan competir de esa forma.

It looks rather rough, but it seems like the horses don’t mind it. Many horses, especially draft horses, love to work and they wouldn’t do well in the competition if they were forced to do it. (I have trouble seeing how the handlers could possibly force two heavy draft horses to pull that much weight using only their voice though) You can even see how willing they are to pull in the beginning (0:23 for example) they are just like sled dogs before a race!! : )

whoa those horses have long manes :P hehe… and i like how these horses prepare, they kind of “warm up” their legs, when they move them a lot just before they pull.. great animals!!!!!

And Yes I know that they are draft horses, I grew up with horses almost all my life. I just seems rather over zealous after the third time. When you are carrying a large weight and suddenly jerk, things tend to go wrong.

ok- after seeing them struggle the second or third time - it was enough. There was no need to do it again and again and again, that’s cruel. You can see them get more tired each time, and then you risk the chance of injury. I understand competition, but you need to be safe and responsible.

it’s abuse, the horse can’t do it’ without being scared of the trainer!!

    the horses can get hurt!!!

  19. By alinanazarenko1 on Jul 11, 2010 | Reply

a short but heavy pull can still hurt them. it’s like being tied to a metal pole.. with rope and some one scaring the living day light out of you and you running full speed.. and the rope ends.. and you hurt ur self… i know it’s not a really good example but… ya…

Horses can get seriously injured, if not fatally, while turned out, or in pasture, just by doing what horses do. A controlled situation, for less than a minute, is far less likely to cause injury.

I always have a high respect to those who can get a horse to do something by a mere voice command. Great job!

wow, those horses are absolutely beautiful

They are draft horses they were not meant to be ridden. They are never worked that hard this is a competition to see how far they can pull it. Not any harder on them than a weight lifter lifting barbells. If they were abused they would not look that good.

those horses are very beautiful and they pull with all their strength ; i wouldn’t put them to that kind of work

The trainers use the whips in private during training sessions. The horses soon learn to associate the sound of the voice, with the pain of being whipped, a bit like the Pavlovs dog experiment.
This way, they only need ti be yelled at during competitions, and they pull out of the fear or association of being hit.
Whether a horse is even capable of feeling joy is debatable, as they arent even self aware animals. They are more creatures of habit, and will do what they are forced/conditioned to.
